Dear Divine Ma,

What Do You Want Me to Learn Today?

“Why are ‘oughts’ so hard for you to surrender to?”

I’ve always resisted authority. I grew up during the hippie revolution of consciousness. It’s built into the NDA of our upbringing. Authority always felt like someone was imposing on me. I am somewhat allergic to that possibility. I was raised to think for myself, to follow my own heart, to follow my passions, to be passionate about whatever I do. Definitely not slavishly to follow someone else’s expectation of me. So, I usually presume every ‘ought’ of life to be one of those.

“But . . . what if oughts these days, in your current situation, actually were dharma?” If that were so, they would definitely deserve a new kind of reaction on my part—a less resistant reaction to them!
