Dear Divine Ma,
What Do You Want Me to Learn Today?
I used to think that good chanting was one of the prime ways to judge one’s spiritual progress. But the truth is its merely one more skill that, while useful, is not a prerequisite for deep devotion, nor deep spirituality.

Some of Ananda’s deepest meditators are absolutely hopeless singers with almost no ability to sing a melody or stay on key. Yet, they often sing out with great enthusiasm, as they should. Singing “in God”. That’s what “en-thus-iasm” means. Acting in God. Living with God’s presence. And that is what chanting, as a tool, is attempting to make happen. Yet these great souls already live in God, with enthusiasm even without being “good” at the mere tool of chanting. Who needs the tool if you’ve already mastered the tool’s intended result?
