Dear Divine Ma,
What Do You Want Me to Learn Today?
“It’s worth thinking about old friendships and what they mean to you. You attended your 50-year high school reunion recently. How do you feel about that?”
Well, I was a BMOC in high school. Championship footballer, successful track athlete, school president, salutatorian. All the big honors. But then in college my ego got taken down to a more appropriate size.
“You mean your ego got smashed!”
Humility is the only way to respond when you’re suddenly surrounded by crowds of other BMOC’s.
“But that was good, so that the future yogi could learn to be humble, right?”
Sure, I guess so. I did get taken down a peg or two for a while.
“Actually, after that you hardly fit in anywhere until you found Ananda. Only then did your confidence begin to grow again, but for reasons more uplifted than the ego-bolstering reasons before. It’s with that newfound foundation that you re-met your ol’ high school buddies. So now it’s OK to shine. It’s a shine that comes from a better place, from deep within you rather than from a mere shallow ego.”
